Leftover ofo bikes serving new purpose in the community

Close to 500 ofo bikes had their locks and GPS devices removed Wednesday to start a new purpose of helping those in need.

“Someone that may need a bike to go back and forth to a doctor’s appointment, or if a kid may need one to go back and forth to school, just to help out with transportation in the community,” said Mona Carroll who is with Robertson County Community Collation.

Robertson County Community Collation is just one of the 23 non-profit groups that will be repurposing the bikes.

“We’re going to start with 50 and just see how that works and if it takes off we’ll continue to come back and get more,” said Carroll.

Debbie Eller the director of College Station Community Services says she’s glad they’ve found a new home for these bikes that once causes issues throughout the city.

“Transportation is something that is always a high priority, we’re excited to be able to do this and so glad that A&M was will to work with us on this project,” said Eller.

Any remaining yellow bikes you see around town are marked with bright tape to show they haven’t been abandoned and have an owner.
